Guests who stop with us, between a walk through the olive groves and a table outdoors, often ask what to see beyond the sea. The Ducal Castle of Corigliano is an answer we are always glad to give.

Nove secoli in poche righe / Nine centuries in a few lines

It was built as a fortress in 1073, on the orders of Robert Guiscard. Over the centuries it passed to the Sanseverino, then the Saluzzo, then the Compagna barons, turning from a fortress into a noble residence. In 1927 it became a National Monument, the town council bought it in 1979 and restored it between 1988 and 2002. Today it is a museum open to all.

The first story is about a ghost. A young woman who worked in the castle fell in love with the baron. The baroness found out and had her locked in the dungeons, where she starved. Some visitors still swear they feel her presence in the halls.

The second is about a secret tunnel. It is said a passage once ran from the castle to the church of Schiavonea, an escape route in case of siege. No one has ever found it for certain, but the story lives on.
